Last week Elise and I caught up on all of Dan and Kerry’s Baby Time Podcasts to date. I found their Podcast in the iTunes Music Store last Sunday and we’ve really enjoyed getting a glimpse into the lives of a pregnant couple who are almost three months ahead of us. I say almost three months because I don’t know how to translate that into weeks pregnant. I still don’t think I know what “fallopian tubes” are or “Daylight Savings Time”, for that matter.
Last night’s episode #10, week 18 was the episode where the couple were going to find out the sex of the baby. Earlier in the afternoon Dan and Kerry had an ultrasound. The radiologist and ultrasound technician concurred that they were 98% certain the sex of the baby.
Elise and I sat on the couch and listened to the entire show in anticipation. The scenario was not much unlike what I imagine our parents and grandparents did in their days; sitting together in the living room, looking at the walls or one another and listening intently to the program on the radio. There was no fancy picture tube to entertain our eyes. We had to use our primitive and God-given imaginations as we quietly listened to the old radio technology that was being streamed at 54 Mbps via a 802.11g wireless card on a 2.4GHz frequency from my iBook to the Airport Express and out through 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. You know, old technology.
The climax was approaching 20 minutes into the new episode. We were about to find out if Dan and Kerry were having a boy or a girl!
Kerry said, “Well, it’s about time…” Meaning they were about to open the sealed envelope from the ultrasound.
Dan interjected and said, “Hang on, I had one more thing. Josh and Elise are listening down in Austin and had a wonderful review posted on their blog - they’re expecting too…”
Elise and were already smiling as we both sat on the couch because we were anticipating first-ever Podcast news of a boy or a girl. We kept smiling and were both thinking, “Hey, there’s another Josh and Elise in Austin and they’re ALSO going to…”
“Hey!… they’re talking about us.”
It was so funny. We were totally caught off guard and dumbfounded.
After the shock we listened in to find out that Dan and Kerry are having a baby boy!

Josh and Elise, we’re thankful to have you as listeners, and I know our hope is that people can learn from our experiences, realizing that - yes - things are as crazy and amazing and wonderful as we make them all sound. (And there’s so much more to come!)
I’m still on Cloud 9 right now… Finding out the way we did is definitely the way to go. I couldn’t recommend it more. Open up an envelope with your family, your friends, your loved ones, and just bask in the moment.

Dear Parents,
You probably have had your baby by now, but I just came across your blog entry when I typed in “Czech word Pregnant”. Well,this is a good omen that your wife is named Elise because one of my fovorite foreign films is the Czech film “Zelary”, and lo and behold the heroine’s name is “Eliska”, that is until she had to change it to Hana to ecape the Nazis.
